MOVEMBER: Your moustache for a great cause

From The Fixed Gear World want to support this cause, we know that there are a lot of men riders with nice moustaches, and here we want to explain something about this Movember Movement around the world impulsed by http://www.movember.com

During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of millions of moustaches around the world. With their “Mo’s” men raise vital funds and awareness for prostate and testicular cancer and mental health. As an independent global charity, Movember’s vision is to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health.

THE MOVEMBER EFFECT

Movember supports world class men’s health programs that combat prostate and testicular cancer and mental health challenges. These programs, directed by the Movember Foundation, are focused on awareness and education, living with and beyond cancer, staying mentally healthy, living with and beyond mental illness and research to achieve our vision of an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health.

HOW IT WORKS

In October Mo Bros sign up at Movember.com, and on the 1st of Movember with a clean-shaven face start their Mo growing journey.

Then for the entire month, these selfless and generous men known as Mo Bros, effectively become walking, talking billboards for 30 days. Through their growing efforts they raise awareness for the often ignored issues of men’s health, by prompting conversations wherever they go.

Another crucial part of being a Mo Bro is to raise funds for men’s health. Men donate their face, and much like taking part in a run or a walk for charity, ask their family and friends to sponsor their efforts.

Movember’s not just for men. The women of Movember are known as Mo Sistas. They play a vital role in the success of Movember by supporting and encouraging the men in their life to get involved. Mo Sistas also get involved by signing up at Movember.com, and participate by raising funds and awareness themselves. Essentially, Mo Sistas do everything that Mo Bros do, without a Mo. More about Mo Sistas here.

At the end of the month, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas celebrate their Movember journey at one of the official Gala Partés held around the world.
Movember challenges men to grow a moustache for the 30-days of November, thereby changing their appearance and the face of men’s health.

MOVEMBER - A GLOBAL MOVEMENT

Since its humble beginnings in 2003 in Melbourne, Australia, Movember has grown to become a truly global movement inspiring more than 3 Million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to participate across 21 countries worldwide.

In addition, Movember is aware of Mo Bros and Mo Sistas supporting the campaign and men’s health causes across the globe, from Moscow to Rio de Janeiro, and everywhere in between.

In 2012, over 1.1 million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas around the world joined the movement, raising EUR €113.5 million .

Movember’s cost focus and economies of scale have resulted in a global fundraising and administration cost to funds raised ratio of 11%. This is well below international fundraising standards, with best practice in the range of 15% - 25%. Exceeding best practice by such a significant amount reflects Movember’s goal of reaching the highest possible campaign outcome while carefully monitoring costs. Click here for our annual report (English only).

While significant steps have been taken toward achieving our vision of an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health, there is still much to be done.

TOOB: Top Toob Protector & Innertube Keychain

TOOB Top Protector and Innertube Keychain

Hi all! Today we will make a review of two products made by Roy Sherizly from Tel Aviv, he is the owner and spirit of TOOB.
First of all we want to tell you something about the story of this new brand of products made by old innertubes, giving them a new live, more cool, and more useful. Here is his story told by the Roy:

As a graphic designer and a fixed gear rider, my love for the two got me thinking... so one day I came up with the idea to try and recycle old innertubes. I started by collecting old innertubes from local bike shops in Tel Aviv and playing around with them (none of the tubes are new). All it takes is one little puncture, and they usually get thrown in the trash - but once you get them nice and clean, it's a great material to work with. Instead of throwing the worn or punctured innertubes away, each one is inspected, cleaned, washed, hand-cut and buttoned - giving them a new purpose to serve and few more miles to travel.

At first, I played around and made a keychain just for myself, but quickly realized that other riders might enjoy the idea as well. The first prototype I created had a rivet/button that doesn't open, and served as a regular keychain (key end). I liked how it made finding my keys from the bottom of my bag much easier, and it was a material from the cycling world.

For the next design, I wanted a solution that would allow the keychain to open and close, so that it could be attached to a belt or bag. That's how the "open/close" keychain came to be.

After the keychains, I felt like making something different - something for the bike rather than the rider. My own bike is a Japanese NJS track bicycle from the Keirin circuit, so I know that lots of riders use the expensive Kashimax top tube protector to keep the handlebars from denting the toptube. My new goal was to create a cheaper alternative for the Kashimax that looks good and also works good. I tried many different designs and finally got one that I liked, and that's how the Top TOOB Protector was born.

TOOB products are created from 700/23c innertubes, and all of the items are hand-made by me. I try to use locally sources buttons and rings, and all of the innertubes are used and saved from the trash.

Top TOOB Protector

As Roy has said in his story, the Top TOOB Protector is a really easy to use product that helps you to protect the upper bar of your frame of your handlebar bits... we have tested it in our Pinky Fixie, and it works perfectly as you can see in the photos. You only need to open the Top TOOB Protector, adjust it in the part of your frame where the handlebar bumps, and close it to fit, and...that's all! Your frame are now protected!
We have discovered it could help you when you park your bike on the street.

TOOB Top Protector

TOOB Innertube Keychain

Another interesting product, is the innertube keychain made with old innertubes, it's very comfortable because it allows you to open and close, so you can carry your keys hooked to anything: pants buckles, backpacks, bicycle handlebar ....as you can see in the photos, it can give you a "fixed gear look"...

TOOB Innertube Keychain

Conclusion

Two products are really easy to use, you help your environment recycling old innertubes and giving you a new and cool fixed gear style...for that, we want to recommend this products and this brand TOOB, Roy...you are doing a great job! Congratulations!

RYOKOU CHAPTER 5: OVERCOME (Shane Perkins documentary)

OVERCOME. Both awe inspiring and highly intense, this is Keirin racing & Shane Perkins in full flight.

This Chapter ends our story.
This final installment takes us into the anatomy of a Keirin race. Not just what happens out on the velodrome, but everything that happens to get there. Did you know that all the athletes live together in the velodrome for 4 days? Did you know that they wear armour? Did you know that the bell toll signifies the final lap?

Shane gives us an insight into his race preparation. The way he 'imposes' himself on his nemeses is an art in itself, and all part of the bike race. Shane used to say 'Just ride the bike and win'...but this episode shows it's far, far more than that.

Shane's family and friends also remark on his life journey so far, as a man and as an elite athlete. Get the tissues ready.

RYOKOU CHAPTER 4: SOLITARY (Shane Perkins documentary)

SOLITARY. Shane Perkins is in Japan, preparing to the race the Keirin.

In preparation to cycle in the Japanese National Keirin series, Shane Perkins re-locates his family to Japan to live, train and race within the culture. It's a culture he loves to be part of. This is his 4th visit to Japan. Chapter 4 takes us into the set-up of his house & home and explores how much diet plays a part in his existence as an elite athlete.

RYOKOU CHAPTER 3: FALL (Shane Perkins documentary)

FALL: The dark period in Shane Perkins' career, and his impetus to rise. (World Cup broadcast footage courtesy of SBS & UCI)

Chapter 3 gets dark. It follows the fall of Shane Perkins. His loss of scholarship from the Australian Institute of Sport, and the events that shaped him to decide to continue riding his bike. It is a window to a past display of persistence and achievement in sport.

We spoke with Shane about these events in both Australia and Japan and learnt that in reality, in addition to his own actions, it was much to do with a number of unique circumstances and the actions of others too. This is a story about learning from your mistakes, about holding your head high, and about sticking it to your doubters. Shane's story is no different to anyone's in life of trying to excel at what you love and what you're good at, while trying to make a buck.

Chapter 4 follows Shane's relocation to Japan, his place in another culture, his pro athlete diet, and gives us all a little sniff of the crazy world that is Keirin racing. Oh and there is a time-lapse of Mt Fuji.

RYOKOU CHAPTER 2: CONSTRUCT (Shane Perkins documentary)

CONSTRUCT. Everything you need to know about the Japanese Keirin, and the mystical Keirin School.

In Chapter 2, it's all about the Keirin. Only in Japan would a bike race be invented to reunite and rebuild a war torn country. Only in Japan would they choose the top of a mountain to locate the official national Keirin School. And only in Japan would Shane Perkins find himself the solace he needs to perfect his craft...

See how men and women from all over Japan apply to become Keirin riders and the full-on training program they are put through from sun up to sun down each and every day for an entire year. No family contact. No sex. Just you and your steel steed getting to know each other very well.

Doing Cruiser Board, a good friend of your fixie this summer!

Hi riders! Summertime is arriving these days...and we are sure that you enjoy a lot with your fixed gear bike, or single speed, but today we want to show you a good friend of your bike, a cruiser board.

Old School Skater from the blog skate4everybody
Our friends of Doing has sent us one their models of cruiser boards, in this case is a plastic cruiser board. Probably you remind the 70`s and 80's when a lot of young people skated little plastic skateboards in fun colors...well, this trend is back and has become hitting very strong!

Here we will make our review of this plastic cruiser board made by Doing a company based in China who makes really nice skates where you can customize your board with a lot of deck, trucks and wheels colors.

Our Plastic Cruiser Board "Glow in the Dark" by Doing
Our Doing cruiser board is similar than other cruisers like Penny, Globe or Stereo Vinyl, but in our case with a lower price and great quality as I will explain in this post.

About the Doing Cruiser Board

Doing Cruiser Board transparent blue wheel
The cruiser board we have test is in white color, but this deck is "glow in the dark" as you can see in one of the pictures. You can choose more colors like: white/black/red/pink/green/blue/purple/orange.
The deck is made in high impact injection molded plastic, this plastic is flexible and supports a weight of 100 kg, my weight is about 86 kg and it works perfectly!
The size of the deck is 22 inch, is shorter than other wooden cruiser boards, but this size is perfect to transport it when you go around your city. In our cruiser board the deck has a fish scaled grip, it's not necessary to fix other grip in the deck, for the moment!
The trucks are made of full aluminum with high quality performance, in our case, the color of the trucks is blue, but you can choose other colors like green, aluminum, red, yellow, white, purple, orange or black.
The bushing is a super soft pu 82A in yellow color.
The bearings are ABEC-7 stainless steel, and the wheels are made in urethane, 45 mm width and 60 mm height. Our wheels are in transparent blue color, but you can choose this wheels in other colors like transparent green, red and pink, or in matte colors like orange, blue, yellow, green, purple, black, white, white glow in the dark or pink. They offers other wheels with LED lights inside..

The Doing Cruiser Board review

We have tested this cruiser board first just before we received the product, without use it or ride it. The deck seems really nice, the color combination remember us a surf board on the blue ocean...nice! The wheels seem soft and big to ride on the city ground.
Here we have some pics of the product before ride it:

Doing Cruiser Board unboxed
And here you have the deck "glow in the dark":

Doing Cruiser Board glowing in the dark

After ride this Doing Cruiser Board we can say it's really funny and easy, a perfect friend of our fixed gear bike riding in the city or in the beach along the long streets and avenues with smooth surfaces. You can enjoy carving on the streets like a surf board or snowbard...really funny!

Here you can see the differences between the unused Doing Cruiser Board and after used:

Doing Cruiser Board (up) after and (down) before
And here you have some pics riding this funny board:

Doing Cruiser Board barefoot riding

Doing Cruiser Board riding along the streets

Conclusion

We recommend this Doing Cruiser Board because:
  • The quality of the product is really good, it's cheaper than other plastic cruiser boards, the price of this Doing Cruiser Board starts in 45$ with free shipping, it could be different if your choose colored trucks, glow in the dark deck, LED wheels...
  • It's very comfortable to carry when you go to the city, to your job, to your school...
  • It's perfect to complement your passion for urban sports: fixed gear bike, single speed bike....
