#sendusyourvideo | ICEvelodrome

Hi riders!!
Amazing video today.... the best way to understand why is to read their email:
Hi, I have had this project influence by iceroadracing and ice speedway what is normal motorsport in here Finland. So i did spike tyres on my old hybrid tires 37mm with screws and put inside 28mm tyre to protect tubes. Tires rolling resistance sucks at the moment but biking on ice velodrome is lot off fun, corners can go as fast as straight with 7mm spikes.
Here is link to video what i did made for first test day on ice.

Thanks a lot Tuomas, enjoy your ice!

RYOKOU CHAPTER 5: OVERCOME (Shane Perkins documentary)

OVERCOME. Both awe inspiring and highly intense, this is Keirin racing & Shane Perkins in full flight.

This Chapter ends our story.
This final installment takes us into the anatomy of a Keirin race. Not just what happens out on the velodrome, but everything that happens to get there. Did you know that all the athletes live together in the velodrome for 4 days? Did you know that they wear armour? Did you know that the bell toll signifies the final lap?

Shane gives us an insight into his race preparation. The way he 'imposes' himself on his nemeses is an art in itself, and all part of the bike race. Shane used to say 'Just ride the bike and win'...but this episode shows it's far, far more than that.

Shane's family and friends also remark on his life journey so far, as a man and as an elite athlete. Get the tissues ready.

RYOKOU CHAPTER 3: FALL (Shane Perkins documentary)

FALL: The dark period in Shane Perkins' career, and his impetus to rise. (World Cup broadcast footage courtesy of SBS & UCI)

Chapter 3 gets dark. It follows the fall of Shane Perkins. His loss of scholarship from the Australian Institute of Sport, and the events that shaped him to decide to continue riding his bike. It is a window to a past display of persistence and achievement in sport.

We spoke with Shane about these events in both Australia and Japan and learnt that in reality, in addition to his own actions, it was much to do with a number of unique circumstances and the actions of others too. This is a story about learning from your mistakes, about holding your head high, and about sticking it to your doubters. Shane's story is no different to anyone's in life of trying to excel at what you love and what you're good at, while trying to make a buck.

Chapter 4 follows Shane's relocation to Japan, his place in another culture, his pro athlete diet, and gives us all a little sniff of the crazy world that is Keirin racing. Oh and there is a time-lapse of Mt Fuji.

RYOKOU CHAPTER 2: CONSTRUCT (Shane Perkins documentary)

CONSTRUCT. Everything you need to know about the Japanese Keirin, and the mystical Keirin School.

In Chapter 2, it's all about the Keirin. Only in Japan would a bike race be invented to reunite and rebuild a war torn country. Only in Japan would they choose the top of a mountain to locate the official national Keirin School. And only in Japan would Shane Perkins find himself the solace he needs to perfect his craft...

See how men and women from all over Japan apply to become Keirin riders and the full-on training program they are put through from sun up to sun down each and every day for an entire year. No family contact. No sex. Just you and your steel steed getting to know each other very well.

RYOKOU CHAPTER 1 (Shane Perkins documentary)

BEGINNING. Shane Perkins and the early years.

In this first chapter, we meet Shane Perkins and learn about how and why he started track cycling. We hear from his parents, Daryl and Maureen Perkins about Shane as a young restless kid wanting to try everything and how with an Olympic track cyclist for a Dad, the curiosity grew and grew until a day on the track unveiled "a kid with a bit of go" ;)

One of the most remarkable quotes is that on his first interstate trip, Shane came back with two Australian records and three Gold Medals and he'd only been riding for 3 months.

Boom.

Juliet Elliott and Thomas Dalbigot win the MET Fixed Adrenalin Tournament

The 13th of April was one of the most anticipated days in the world’s mini velodrome racing calendar. The MET Fixed Adrenalin Tournament is a unique track event for fixed gear bikes. A wild ride that takes place on one of the smallest velodromes in the world. Fearless cyclists face a demanding test of mental and physical strength and technical skill. The MET FAT is a fantastic tournament. As with many knockout tournaments, the stakes are high and the excitement is intense. The magic really started after the qualifying runs round of the tournament, which is when only the 16 fastest riders enter the final rounds. Juliet Elliott and Thomas Dalbigot proved to be the most skilled riders on the track that night and won the prestigious trophy.

You Spin Me Round

There is an incredible purity to track cycling. It's not unlike great design. When you pare everything down, forget the bells, whistles, frills and anything that isn't absolutely necessary, you are left with a track bike and a perfectly smooth, unobstructed course on which to ride it.
This is what a velodrome represents. Cycing, stripped down to the bare essentials. And it is beautiful. The bikes are works of art, fit to be stared at for lengthy periods, even while at rest.
The Forest City Velodrome (forestcityvelodrome.ca) in London, Canada, is a rare beast. There aren't many indoor velodromes in the world, and this is one of the more unusual of them all. In 2005, a few track cycling enthusiasts found an old unused hockey arena that had been set for demolition, and figured it was just barely big enough to cram a velodrome into.

You Spin Me Round from The Department of Style on Vimeo.

The Department of Style is a field guide to the timeless, the adventurous, and the enthusiastic. We celebrate craft. We explore tradition. We find the creative imaginations that take classic forms and make them their own.
It is about understanding that in life, doing something right takes time, and skill, and effort. But therein lies the joy. Finding people who still do those things that way and telling their stories is the original Departmental mandate.
